Vancouver UFO Meetup Inception Story

Founded June 3, 2009.

Brian Ruhe taught adult education classes on UFOs through local school boards and community centres across Greater Vancouver. Around March 2009, he launched the Vancouver UFO Meetup as a way to promote these courses and connect with others who shared an interest in the UFO subject.

Soon after, he realized the opportunity to build something more meaningful—a dedicated UFO community in Vancouver. He organized the first Meetup in his apartment.

Six days before that first gathering, Brian had his own UFO sighting: a small, spherical object, approximately two feet in diameter, flying silently at night just a block from his home. He later interpreted this experience as a personal message from extraterrestrial beings, suggesting he was moving in the right direction.

The first meeting was an immediate success, with 13 attendees. Shortly afterward, a member named Jesse offered a larger co-op meeting room, which became the group’s regular venue for the next five years.
